Good news - FINALLY! The weather here on the Iron Range appears to be stabilizing and warming…maybe spring IS actually on the horizon???
Most courses in the area are still evaluating course conditions (to set an opening date) on a day-to-day basis, word on the street is that a couple of the golf courses on the Iron Range have already opened!
Eveleth Municipal golf course, located just south of Eveleth on Hwy 53 has opened for the 2008 season. Nestled in a grove of towering pine and maple trees, Eveleth Municipal Golf Course borders St. Mary’s Lake and proves that bigger isn’t necessarily always better. This course’s nine challenging holes are enjoyed by seasoned golfers and beginners alike. Rolling hills, the number five tee-off over the lake, and several other tricky features make this course fun and one of the best values in the state.
Wolfridge Golf Course, located between Virginia and the Lake Vermilion/Cook area, is a challenging, scenic and serene golf course with a tradition of excellence. It’s a golfer’s dream - with stunning panoramic views highlighted by inviting, meticulously groomed fairways and immaculate bent grass greens and wildlife galore. The most unique feature of Wolfridge is that it’s a reversible course that brings a new challenge to golfers daily!
The region’s championship courses - The Legend and The Quarry at Giants Ridge and The Wilderness at Fortune Bay have their tentative opening dates on each of their respective web sites.
Be sure to check back for more info as the other courses continue to open their greens to the 2008 golf season.

Well fellow golfers, I just got back from Jamaica. When I left Minnesota, there was no snow on the ground so I took my clubs to get some practice in…only to come back to over three feet of snow on the Iron Range. Glad I took the clubs. At least I got some golf in, because it does not look good for another two or three weeks in NE Minnesota – unless we get rain and the weather warms up FAST! I’m keeping my fingers crossed!
My buddies want to go play in northern Wisconsin this weekend (more specifically, the Spooner area)…I’m pretty sure I will go. Gotta get some more practice in before the courses in this neck of the woods are open. I CAN’T WAIT! The courses on the Iron Range are some of the best courses in the state, bar none.
I will let everyone know when any course opens up on the Iron Range - be sure to check back for my updates.
As much as I want the golf season here NOW, the Iron Range received another couple feet of snow over the past week and they’re forecasting more in the next few days. Disgusting for us golf groupies! Thankfully, I’ll be on vacation for the next week plus, in a location minus the snow and where warm, sunny weather is status quo. Nevertheless, courses in the area are ramping up for yet another spectacular golf season. Many of them are anticipating an early May opening and several of them are taking tee times now. Check out a list of all of the courses on the Iron Range here.
The Iron Range is home to several championship and first class municipal courses. Several of the courses participate in a cooperative program, offering golfers a fantastic golf getaway each and every year. The 2008 “Wild North Player’s Club” card is offering seven great golf specials with your FREE 2008 Player’s Club WILD Card on your second round of play! Obtain your 2008 Wild Card at one of these great courses in the region:
I had some help last year from some friends to produce a ‘webisode’ about why the Iron Range is one of my favorite golf getaways in all of Minnesota (or the Midwest for that matter). Check it out here! As I’ve mentioned a million times before, the Iron Range is truly A Great Way to Getaway and a hidden gem among greater Minnesota golf vacations.
So, until the snow showers decide to produce May flowers, I’ll continue to blog about my hopes for a start to the golf season on the Iron Range. Be sure to check my blog for more Iron Range golf info, golf tips and more!
